Computer Aided Garden Designs
Many individuals are under the false impression that CAD software is only used for
designing automobiles, or expensive high-rise buildings. However, CAD software
is also used by may professional garden designers and other professions. The CAD
software available to the professional landscaper includes architectural design
software especially geared for the drafting garden plans, 3-D software, and image-editing
software for visual representation. Several CAD programs include vector drawing
software, bitmap editing software, 3D modeling software and animation software.
In addition, many programs have the ability to print 3D models as well paper plans.
There is also tailor-made CAD software currently on the market for the amateur garden
designer or homeowner. This program contains many of the functionality of the more
advanced programs but packaged in an easier-to-use format. Years ago, before the advent of CAD, garden designs were traditionally set out on
the ground, or drawn using surveying instruments, including tape measures and theodolites.
This was a very long and tedious process and usually involved several days if not
weeks worth of work. With the advent of CAD (Computer Aided Design), more and more
garden designers began working on computer screens, to design gardens, then printing
the plans out on paper and issuing them to the garden builders. Today, many elements of garden design include landforms, water features, fountains,
garden ponds, planting design, garden buildings, garden lighting, garden sculpture,
garden ornaments, garden furniture, ornamental plants and trees as well as hard
landscape materials. All of these elements in many different combinations are used
to create a wide range of types of gardens.
